  • The CEE project – Centre for Environmental Education for the Waste Management Company in Gliwice, Rybnicka Street.
    The CEE is a unique and demonstrative project in terms of shaping environmental awareness. The CEE is the only facility of its kind to be built in the vicinity of a landfill site. The Centre for Environmental Education is intended to fulfil two functions: the day-to-day supervision of the landfill and waste management, and educational awareness-raising for children and young people.
    The project involves the construction of a single-storey building with an unusual plan with a green roof suitable for pedestrian traffic that blends in with the surroundings.
    The form of the building was inspired by the neighbouring hill, which is a reclaimed waste disposal site.
    On the roof of the building, a nature trail, a photovoltaic installation and a beehive area were designed.
    The area in front of the entrance to the building is intended to have an educational function for school excursions and beyond. On the square in front of the building, unusual small architecture was proposed, creating a graphic sign symbolising recycling. In the central point, a sculpture was realised The square in front of the building is decorated with the sculpture Vita Granum Gliwice – Gliwice Grain of Life, whose author is the eminent sculptor and medallist who lives in Gliwice, Prof. Krzysztof Nitsch. It symbolises caring hands surrounding a sprouting seed.
    The second unusual sculpture, which has the character of an installation, is a model of the structure of the planet Earth, which was created from elements printed on 3D printers. The model is intended to symbolise the globe with its continents, which is our common good. This unusual installation was designed using parametric software and is probably the largest (2m sphere diameter) 3D printed structure of its kind. The sculpture was designed at the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology by a team consisting of Dr. Eng. arch. Tomasz Bradecki (initiator, coordinator), dr hab. inż. arch. Michał Sitek (coordinator, chief designer, technology, supervision coordination of 3D printing) dr hab. inż. arch. Krzysztof Gerlic, students: Igor Gdula, Weronika Piechulek, Jakub Ptaszny (designers, 3D model and script designers, 3D print operators, experimenters, creators, performers)
    In the rising roof zone, seating steps have been integrated into the terrain. These create an open-air seating and environmental education area.
    From the pre-entry zone, two educational paths have been proposed: the first to the roof of the building and the second, which climbs up to the reclaimed waste site – there visitors will be able to walk around the reclaimed landfill and see from a distance the part before reclamation.
    The project proposes reusable, prefabricated and eco-friendly elements: folded sheet metal, glulam structural beams and a green roof.
    The building will contain offices, staff rooms , an exhibition and education room, and a conference and education room.
    In the exhibition part, educational, artistic elements are planned with the message of creating environmental awareness

Both the location of the facility – on the site of a reclaimed landfill, the programme of the facility – aimed at building ecological awareness among children, young people and adults, as well as interesting material and architectural solutions, point to a new direction in thinking about construction, in which the use of primary resources is minimised, and the functioning of those already present in the built environment is extended.
    The Environmental Education Centre has the potential to become an interesting point of interest for school and holiday trips, contributing to a deeper understanding of waste processing, the production of recyclable materials and the recycling of previously used materials.”
